The Lemosho Route is widely considered the most scenic path up Mount Kilimanjaro. Beginning on the mountain’s western flank, the trail crosses quiet rainforest paths, opens to the wide Shira Plateau, and offers some of the best acclimatization opportunities before joining the Machame Route.
With a high summit success rate, varied landscapes, and fewer crowds in the early days, this route is perfect for trekkers seeking a well-paced climb with breathtaking views and a memorable wilderness experience.

Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi. Rest and attend a pre-trek briefing and gear check.

Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m)
After breakfast, drive to Lemosho Gate (2,100m) and begin trekking through peaceful rainforest, watching for colobus monkeys and colorful birds. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Distance: 6 km | Time: 3–4 hrs | Habitat: Rainforest
Overnight at Mti Mkubwa Camp.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp (3,500m)
Climb out of the forest into open moorland, with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro’s western slopes. Reach Shira 1 Camp on the edge of the plateau.
Distance: 8 km | Time: 5–6 hrs | Habitat: Moorland

Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp (3,840m)
A gentle trek across the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful features. Optional acclimatization hikes are available in the afternoon.

Overnight at Shira 2 Camp.
Day 4: Shira 2 to Lava Tower (4,630m), down to Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Ascend gradually to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and hanging glaciers.
Distance: 10 km | Time: 6–8 hrs | Habitat: Alpine Desert → Valley Moorland

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a fun and rewarding scramble, then traverse alpine ridges to Karanga Camp, positioned for optimal acclimatization.

Overnight at Karanga Camp.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)
Continue upward to Barafu Camp, your staging point for the summit. Hydrate, rest, and prepare for your midnight ascent.

Overnight at Barafu Camp.
Day 7: Summit to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then Descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Begin your summit push at midnight. Reach Stella Point by sunrise and Uhuru Peak shortly after—Africa’s highest point. Celebrate, then descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp for rest.
Distance: 16 km | Time: 10–14 hrs | Habitat: Arctic → Moorland
Overnight at Mweka Camp.
Begin your summit push at midnight. Reach Stella Point by sunrise and Uhuru Peak shortly after—Africa’s highest point. Celebrate, then descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp for rest. Distance: 16 km | Time: 10–14 hrs | Habitat: Arctic → Moorland Overnight at Mweka Camp.
Finish the descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer to your hotel for a hot shower and celebration meal.
